Frequently Asked Questions

What are Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)?

Black Soldier Fly Larvae are a natural, sustainable source of protein and calcium.

They are the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly and are widely used in

poultry feed, reptile diets, fishing bait, and soil enrichment.

They are not houseflies and are not pests.

Are your BSFL raised in the United States?

Yes. EatsDirt™ raises Black Soldier Fly Larvae locally in Northern Wisconsin.

During periods of increased demand, we may also partner with trusted

U.S.-based producers to maintain consistent quality and availability.

All BSFL used in our products are US raised.

What is Cluck Crack™?

Cluck Crack™ is our signature BSFL spice scratch.

A small-batch blend of dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae, scratch, and culinary herbs designed

to complement a balanced poultry diet.

It is intended as a supplemental treat, not a complete feed.

Why use BSFL instead of mealworms?

Black Soldier Fly Larvae are naturally higher in calcium (up to 50x more) than mealworms

and are a strong protein source for backyard flocks.

Many poultry keepers prefer BSFL for supporting shell quality and balanced nutrition.

Can I feed Cluck Crack™ as a complete feed?

No. Cluck Crack™ is a supplemental treat and should be offered alongside a complete layer or grower feed.

Always provide fresh water for you flocks.

Do BSFL improve egg yolk color?

Diet plays a major role in yolk pigmentation.

Many flock owners notice deeper yolk color when supplementing with nutrient-dense feeds, like BSFL.

Individual results vary depending on overall diet and conditions.

What is Frass?

Frass is the biological byproduct of Black Soldier Fly Larvae.

It is commonly used as an organic fertilizer and soil amendment,

containing organic matter such as, shed exoskeletons(chitin),

residual organic matter, beneficial soil microbes,

and naturally occurring nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Nutrients that can support healthy soil structure and root uptake.

Are your products safe for reptiles?

Absolutely! Live and dried BSFL are commonly used as reptile feed due to their protein and calcium profile.

Many reptiles, such as Bearded Dragons & Geckos can eat dried BSFL. However, they may prefer live over dried.

Always provide appropriate hydration and dietary balance for your specific species.

Can live BSFL be used for fishing bait?

Yes! Live Soldier Grubs are incredibly durable and stay active on the hook,

making them attractive for freshwater or ice fishing.

They naturally slowdown in colder temps but regain activity once brought back up to room temperatures.

Will my yard be full of flies if used for composting?

Black Soldier Flies generally stay highly localized to their food source and

rarely wander far from the area where they were introduced,

making them ideal for localized composting.

While the larvae can crawl several yards away from their food source

to find a dry, dark, and warm place to pupate,

the adult flies are weak fliers that prefer to stay near their breeding site.

The adult flies do not sting, bite, or eat, and their whole purpose is to breed the next generation.

What happens after they are done composting?

BSFL are like a cleanup crew. Once they eat through the compost,

most of them crawl off to finish their life cycle, so the population naturally

disappears unless a new food source is introduced.

How should I store dried BSFL or Cluck Crack™?

Store in a cool, dry place in a sealed container. Proper storage helps maintain freshness and quality.

Shelf life is dependent on environment and packaging.

Our dried BSFL products last up to 6-12 months when sealed and stored properly.
